Junior Maths Challenge 2018

Students at Middlewich High achieved 2 golds, 5 silvers and 6 bronzes in this year’s UKMT Junior Maths Challenge.  Over 260,000 students from years 7 and 8 across the UK sat the Junior Maths Challenge with roughly the top 6% receiving a gold certificate, the next 13% silver and the next 21% bronze.

Congratulations to the following students:

Gold – Matthew Lopes and Finn Stephens. Both students also achieved best in year certificates and Matthew the best in school certificate.

Silver – Megan Evans, Antonia Appleton, Shane Bell, Anthony Donohue and Rachael Eyres.

Bronze – Mollie Wilkinson, Kiera Bennion, Alfred Middleton, Niamh Mullan, Sophie Yearsley and Elizabeth Lea.

Approximately 8200 of the top students are invited to sit a follow-on competition, the Junior Mathematical Olympiad or Kangaroo.  We were very pleased to have had Matthew and Finn both participate in the Kangaroo competition.  Finn achieved a certificate of participation and Matthew a certificate of merit, placing him in the top 25% of participants.  Matthew is our first student to achieve this award and it is an outstanding achievement for a year 7 pupil.  We congratulate both students on their success in the competition.

Mathematical Education on Merseyside Challenge ’18 and Senior Challenge ‘18

A number of our students entered the Merseyside Challenges and we are very pleased that two students, Matthew Lopes and Gabrielle Williams, were successful in achieving awards.  Both students were invited to University of Liverpool to be presented with certificates of merit and receive book vouchers as their prize.  Well done to both students, they are the first to achieve awards in these competitions for a number of years.

Intermediate Maths Kangaroo 2018

Following their success in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge Noah Curran, Elliot Chan, Euan Dalziel, David Harrop and Rowan Westmacott all participated in the European Kangaroo and were awarded certificates of participation.  Well done to all on their achievement.

Noah’s performance the Intermediate Challenge placed him in the top 1.5% of students and as a result he has been invited to attend a National Mathematics Summer School.  This will be a week long residential in Leeds, where 48 students will take part in Mathematically demanding and stimulating sessions led by UKMT.  Noah is our first student to be offered the opportunity to attend the Summer School and we congratulate him on this achievement and hope he has an enjoyable time.
